Human beings have been very curious about "dreams" since ancient times. According to Freud's theory, dreams are messages conveyed by the subconscious mind and can reveal an individual's wishes or fears. British dream interpretation expert Delphi Ellis analyzed the 10 most common dreams of 2,000 adults to help everyone understand the hidden meanings behind their dreams.
1. Falling (53%)About half of the people have dreamed of falling, which is an unsettling feeling. Ellis said that you often have falling dreams "after experiencing life changes," such as: unemployment, retirement, moving, breakup, or before exams, reflecting that you are in a period of insecurity and uncertainty.
Although this is not a pleasant dream, we can try to draw some positive meanings from it, because it indicates that adventure is coming, and we will feel anxious because of facing unknown areas, but remember that no matter the pressure, pain, or fear in the dream or in reality, it will gradually subside as the event passes.
For many people this is simply the worst nightmare: some creature or force is chasing us, but our legs are glued together and we can’t move.
This kind of dream about being trapped and not wanting to fall into a certain situation is probably because you subconsciously feel that your progress in real life is too slow or you are unable to move forward. For example, your career development has stalled, or your plan has been postponed. If you have such a dream one day and think it is a hint, you might as well calm down and find out the goals that you currently feel stagnant or need to catch up on, and develop new strategies to move forward.
3. Partner cheating (22%)About one-fifth of people said they would dream about their partner cheating. Ellis reminded that dreaming about the other party's infidelity does not mean that the other party has actually cheated. It is more like a reflection of the uneasiness and fear you feel in the relationship.
If you have experienced your partner's infidelity in the past and realize that you have thoughts of "doubting or blaming your partner" in your heart, please pay attention to such emotions and have healthy communication with your partner about each other's insecurities.
4. Dreaming about the death of someone you know (21%)Dreaming about the death of someone you know is one of the last things many people want to experience, but again, dreams are not a prediction. Dreams use "death" as a form to reflect that we are witnessing the change of someone.
Some parents often dream about the death of their children. It is likely that they are going through a period in their lives when their children grow up and become more independent, and they feel uneasy because of the changes in the parent-child relationship.
5. Tooth loss (21%)Many people have suddenly discovered that their teeth have become loose in their dreams. When they wake up, they feel confused and even worry about whether it is time to go to the dentist.
Ellis said that dreams about tooth loss are related to growth experience and cultural background. In adults’ dreams, tooth loss may symbolize worries about wealth or status being shaken, and anxiety about losing important people and things.
6. Dreaming about idols (20%)Meeting celebrities or idols in the sleep world is nothing more than a "dream." In daily life, we admire someone and regard them as role models. In dreams, we tend to feel that they are closer than they actually are, and there are even dream plots about fighting with them.
7. Taking an exam for which you are not prepared (19%)This is one of the common anxiety dreams. The content of the dream is an exam. In fact, you may be about to face or have just completed a speech, meeting or interview, so there will be emotional flows of "feeling not prepared enough" or "feeling not ready".
8. Flying, floating (18%)Flying in the air is a fun dream for some people, but a terrifying dream for others.
So when interpreting dreams, you need to be aware of how you feel when dreaming. If you enjoy the state of floating or flying, you may also be at the peak of your career or life in reality.
On the contrary, if you feel scared or worried in your dream of flying, it may imply that you are longing for stability and grounding in your heart. At this stage, your way of thinking is more rational, and you would rather stay down-to-earth than rushing forward.
Dreaming about others being unkind to you may imply that you have subconsciously felt alienated or isolated from the community recently. If important family members and friends appear mean in the dream, don’t be too nervous. This is actually an opportunity to re-examine your social circle. What kind of interactive relationship do you really want to establish in your heart? How do you want others to treat you?
10. Being late for important occasions (15%)Many people are afraid of being late, causing them to sleep poorly and even have dreams because of it. If you always feel that you are missing out on something, it may also reflect other difficulties in your heart, such as the frustration of being ignored at work, feeling helpless, and feeling that you cannot achieve your goals and expectations.
Dreams are not divination, nor do they need to be interpreted in terms of good or bad. More importantly, they remind us to examine our current goals and sources of stress, and guide us to a clearer direction for improvement.
