The Daily Mail reports that Maguire’s retrial in Greece has been postponed for the fourth time, more than five years after the Manchester United defender was arrested in Greece.
The highly anticipated hearing was originally scheduled to begin on Wednesday morning on the island of Syros. Maguire's defense team had arrived at the court to prepare to clear his name, but the trial was postponed again until March next year. There is even a possibility that the case will not go to trial at all, because Greece’s statute of limitations will expire in August 2028, eight years after the case took effect.
Maguire does not need to appear in court in person this time. In the summer of 2020, he was arrested following a fight during a family vacation and found guilty of assaulting a police officer and attempted bribery. The Manchester United star was given a 21-month suspended sentence at the time, but under Greek law the sentence was automatically revoked on appeal.
This retrial has been postponed three times before. The first time was in May 2023 because Maguire’s defense lawyer was unable to appear in court, then in February 2024 due to a strike by Greek lawyers, and again in March this year.
The 32-year-old Maguire is currently taking advantage of the international match day to spend time with his family. He was once again excluded from the list by England coach Tuchel.
Maguire has not played for the national team for 13 months since the last interim coach Lee Carsley selected him to play against Ireland last September.
